Woke up and realized it hadn't snowed yet. Heard reports of heavy snow west of me about 50 miles and south of me about 30 miles. Left Meeker at 7:30a and encountered mostly wet roads as I traveled south on Colorado Highway 13 and then west on Rio Blanco County Road 5. Snow level was about 8,000 feet.

After making a loop of 100 miles and thinking NWS really messed this one up, the snow came. For the next two hours, near white out conditions and treacherous roads greeted me as I made my ...

Storms started forming ahead of a cf about 7:30 pm. Wind and rain preceeded a more intense series of cells that included significant CC/CG lightning. I started tracking them from 16 south of Meeker on Highway 13. Storms moved parallel (south to north) to highway so road access was easy. Followed them to just south of Meeker where they turned more northeasterly and headed over the flat tops. Got some pics of the lightning, including one CG that struck about 1/8 mile from where I was taking ...

Severe weather across the SoCal deserts and western AZ, with at least a half-dozen severe-warned storms in the area. However, I was not able to accomplish a quality chase to any of them, except for a late afternoon early evening attempt to intercept an unexpected severe storm in the Coachella Valley opposite the mountains east of me. This huge monster erupted in response to an outflow boundary that raced west through the southern deserts out of a massive storm complex along the CA/AZ border ...

Had an EXCELLENT chase today! Hit two severe storms along I-40, first one 40 miles east of Barstow, Ca about 5pm, then the second one 35 miles west of Needles, Ca around 7pm. Both storms began to rotate and had classic stacked plate meso structure and shelf clouds! The first storm even had a non rotating wall cloud! When I got into the second storm, I stayed on it well into darkness and had some of the most intense and gorgeous lightning you can imagine.

Here is one of the bolts I captured ...

So, yesterday afternoon, quietly minding my own business and a flash flood warning pops up on GR for the Piceance Creek area about 20 miles sw of me. I know this area can get really messed up if heavy rains hit. I looked at radar and loops and saw a lone cell parked over target area for nearly two hours. Rainfall estimates at 3" and hail to be pea-size. Line was moving east but another was forming to the west about 80 miles.

Left house about 4:15 pm and headed south on Highway 13 ...

Friday, July 24, 2009 - Strong Monsoon activity in Arizona and Southern California.

Began a 3-day storm chase trip with my friend Gerry Kerns. He drove while I navigated, operating laptop and cams. Intercepted first round of storms along I-10 at Desert Center, Ca around 11am. A few rounds of lightning, and some light showers but nothing to write home about yet. After pulling over near Desert Center and assessing the situation for about 15 minutes, we proceeded north on SR-177 towards Parker, ...

Started day with a 2% slight for eastern Colorado. Waited in Loveland until late afternoon and then south on I-25 for a target east of Denver, near Byers. After an excrutiatingly long wait, cells came off mountains and went severe east of Denver. Great lightning show at night but camera not keeping up. Called it a night and returned to Loveland at about midnight.

Drove north on I-25 and saw cu field going up north of Ft. Collins about 3:30p. Headed out about 5pm starting with cells coming off mountains between Ft. Collins and Loveland. Followed cells along and slightly north of US 34 through evening. Ran into 3/4" hail covering road. Had a few stones pushing 1.25" that woke me up on hitting my ride.

Although svr warned, no rotation seen, just a lot of wind, hail, rain and lightning. Called it off just west of Ft. Morgan. Of course, ...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=un0Hi171DRk

Very short vid with a few highlights, it was more of a "photo" op day than a video one.

Some of the largest hail I encountered was golfball size hail about 8 miles south of Basset, NE...

the first storm at the start of the vid is that storm that dropped that... the storm near sunset was west of Basset near Long Pine, VERY nice LP Supercell with some rotation, both storms had weak rotation but were too high based IMO

I considered this a very successful chase. Started off the day by sitting in a dust storm with visibility down to a mile at some points. The first cell I intercepted in south central was sort of a "pre-show" storm. It had a fantastic wall cloud that was rotating quite nicely at the end of its life and actually kind of wrapped up into a little funnel before it's death.

The next storm I intercepted again moved out of OK into south central KS near Winfield I think. Sorry I always mess ...

What was sort of a let down after all the hype, I chased western MO and far northwest AR on the 26th and 27th. The storms fired up around 10pm in northern Missouri and eastern KS and build to the south overnight. I followed a few storms around midnight and ended up staying in a hotel in Lamar,MO. I woke up around 7am and the storms were about 10 miles west, i got ready to go quickly and was on the road by 715am. I tracked some storms near the Lamar area and left them in favor of the "increasing ...

Myself and Kory Hartman met up in Sioux Falls, SD. We headed south and as we were near Sioux City, IA we noticed some strong development just to the west and north of Omaha. We continued to head south to intercept this rare late season chase opportunity. We came across several thunderstorms near Omaha but nothing tornadic. We ended up heading home around 6pm as of course night falls pretty early this time of year.
